Web changes are coming

By Matt Veto

As you can see, the Veto League Baseball Web home is undergoing some changes. In fact, what you see right now, will likely be quite different the next time you come back, and again the time after that.

In the meantime, click here to visit our existing Web site. Slowly, but surely, everything you can find on the old site will be shipped over here.

Let me tell you what you are seeing here, though (much, much credit to Jon Weber, our Webmaster, for helping us get things going).

The banner photo across the top (as of the writing of this entry, a pretty little piece of dewy grass) will be replaced with a new Veto League Baseball banner heading. At the top of the page, you will see some tabs. We will be adding to those shortly, and they will replace what was my makeshift navigation bar that previously ran down the left side of the page.

The column you find to the right of this page is made up of interchangeable “widgets” — a type of fancy Web technology that will allow us the capacity to do some neat things, like perhaps add a calender, or take a snapshot of some statistics of the week, or weekly leaders, or something like that.

Then, at the bottom of this entry, you’ll find an area where you may leave comments. It will be nice to know there are actually people reading the stories we write, and it will allow for some good interaction.

This whole WordPress-based style will afford us the much-needed ability to edit the Web site from anywhere we have an Internet connection. Previously, I was the keeper of the Web, essentially. Everything on the Web was on my computer and needed to run through FrontPage to upload. Very time consuming, very painful.

We also have a very, very snazzy stat-keeping program that will be unveiled shortly. In the meantime, be patient as we change over, and use the old site until we get things settled in over here.

Opening day is roughly slated for May 2.

So far so good…I really like the picture on the top…very cool. Is their still going to be some color changes or is al lwhite what is going to be used?

  • barton says:

i think this is better because its all on one page instead of having to go to a different page for the forum

From what I gathered at the meeting, black text on white background seemed to be the favored look.

What we will probably do, though, is add some kind of new background to the background — meaning: you see how there is space on either side of the blog that runs the center of the screen? It’s kind of a gray, bleeding into white background? That can be manipulated. I was thinking of placing our home plate logo on a blue field and kind of repeating that down the sides.

that would be neat but as far as the room for the text can we make it fill in between the gray lines?

  • Veto says:

I’m not sure yet on that. You mean expanding the whole thing to make it wider?

P.S. I see the forum comments, but have no idea where the approve button is! I’ll get to that later!

Like it a lot right now…..just would like to see the sides filled in but sounds like you have good options going there, when will the links to things like stats, schedule ect be going up….I think that would help when showing the site to others….

I will look into seeing what I can do about the font on the forum. It may take some playing to get that figured out.

As far as the white outside background, it needs to be changed to something. I’ll play around with a few things next chance I get. I must say I am a fan of solid colors and not a fan of repeating images. They are very distracting and usually take away from the content.

I think we should try a couple different things though and let users vote on what they like best…

yeah next to the text withint the gray lines, that way its easier to see what is written, i dont know if you can do that or not but it would be a little easier to read!

The new website looks great! I hope to make it out sometime this season, although I seem to say that every year :(
