The World Series is just getting underway with Alex Miller making his first appearance in the coaching role for the Cannons, taking on Mason Overmire's Heavy Hitters. Overmire is seeking his 4th world series title. Last Saturday, the two teams swapped home field advantage, with both home teams taking their game in defensive battles. The Hitters took the opener, coming back after trailing early to win it 9-8. In the second game, the Cannons' stout defense shut down the Hitters' offense and took it 5-2. The best-of-seven series continues this weekend.
The annual All-Star Classic was announced by President Paul. The night game will take place on Saturday, September 28th, 7 pm at Douglas Park in Rock Island. Family, friends and fans of baseball are invited to attend the game. There is no charge to watch, however, the league does collect non-perishable food items which will be donated to the River Bend Foodbank. In the league's 15-year partnership with the RBFB, 9,878 pounds of food have been donated to families in need. Everyone who donates at least one non-perishable will receive a ticket to win one of a number of raffle baskets.
VLB's annual night game is played as a tribute to the players who have played the most games in 2024. The top 24 players are given an invitation. There are a record 83 games scheduled to be played this season, with the top 24 players each having played a minimum of approximately 20 of those games.
Concessions will not be sold, however, snacks and beverages will be provided at no cost. A free will donation bucket will be set up for those who wish to donate to the league.
In other news, the annual highly anticipated exhibition game between the Rookies and the Veterans took place on Thursday, September 12th. The Rookies team had a stacked lineup to include the 2024 batting champion and homerun leader Noah Harrison, as well as heavy hitter Spencer Darland and MVP-candidate Andrew Schubert. The game was back-and-forth with the Veterans winning it on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the 6th inning, 16-15. The top four hitters on the rookies' side batted 17-for-24. Alex Miller was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with veterans Paul and Overmire each platting three runs.
