The best baseball all year is being played in the playoffs as Veto and McCafferty matched up for a best of three playoff series. The winner earned a trip to the first annual VLB World Series and Veto packed his bags on Monday.
Veto, after clinching first place with a 13-7 win over Heckenkamp on Saturday, played two close games against McCafferty on Sunday and Monday taking them both by scores of 7-5 and 4-1.
“The low score depicts just how close these games were,” Veto said. “McCafferty has had my number in the field all year, and he had my number at the end of the 2002 season. He picked a good team this weekend and I knew anything could happen.”
Veto pulled the right strings picking MVP candidates Steve Roberts and Kiel Engstrom for game one of the series. Roberts was 2 for 5 with a home-run and two RBI on Sunday, while Engstrom went 4 for 5. Casey Thomas scored two of the 7 runs hitting safely 4 of 5 times.
McCafferty led in game one 4-1 after 6 innings. But in the bottom of the 7th, Veto plated 6 runs that sealed the win.
“We just kept throwing the ball around,” McCafferty said after emerging from the porta-potty. “I mean, this time it wasn’t even Carlson’s fault.”
More sparkling defense shone through on Monday. In the lowest scoring game in VLB history, Veto knocked McCafferty out of the playoff hunt with a 4-1 victory. The previous low was a 4-3 game last season between these same competitors.
Two RBI by Scott Shattuck in the first inning would have held up the entire game for Veto, but runs were added in the 3rd and 5th innings. McCafferty’s only run came in the first inning and it came off his bat. McCafferty singled in Scott Malcolm, but no more offense could be found.
“I shoulda hit that ball harder in the fourth,” McCafferty said after just missing a home-run.
On a positive note, Greg ‘the Assman’ Asleson played an inning on Sunday and did not bat.
“I was really impressed with McCafferty’s play in the playoffs,” Veto said. “Earlier this season Lance told me he let a ball go through the infield because he didn’t want to bend over. On Monday he dove for a ball and took away a double from me. I love this intensity. I kind of wanted to match up with McCafferty in the World Series just because we have this friendly traditional Veto League rivalry. But it’ll be nice to finally be able to play on the same team.”
Kiel Engstrom leads the hit brigade in the playoffs thus far. He has hit safely 8 of 11 times knocking in 1 RBI. Mike Myers leads offensive numbers with 3 playoff RBI.
Veto will move into the World Series, which will begin as soon as the playoff picture has shaped up. Engstrom and Heckenkamp will match up next on Wednesday, July 23rd at 4:15 pm at Saukie. Coverage begins at 11:30 am on WDUM 690 AM.
