Rain puddles and a set of bleachers pushed VLBers off of their home Saukie Field for game four of the best of five Veto League World Series.
The Black Hawk diamond would only be a dry safe-haven for six innings. But even with a downpour, Mother Nature couldn't drown the World Series spirits of Scott Ellefritz and his victorious River Bandits.
"I thought we might call it after six innings when I had the lead, "Coach Ellefritz said after the game. "When we made the final out after the sixth in the rain we started to celebrate. The Vandals wanted to play through it. So we did, and things still turned out for us.”
The chilling rain was opposite the ending of last year's World Series where it took Casey Thomas two games to win in the sweltering August heat. However, the ending mirrored last season in that a rookie captain took the Championship.
The Bandits accomplished the improbable--winning three straight games on the road to come away with a 3 games to 1 World Series victory.
“Fighting all the way here after being forced to play in extra regular season games just to see the playoffs--I couldn't ask for more," Ellefritz said.
With that the 2004 VLB season comes to a close--a season that saw unparalleled success. Next year has a lot to live up to.
