May 18: Vandals 37, Meteors 22
On Sunday, May 18, Kiel Engstrom's Vandals took a game one victory over the Meteors to open the season down at Douglas Park.
Kiel's crew put up an early, season-high 37 runs to the Meteors' 22 in the win.
Bob Zerull hit the first homer of the season, a grand slam over the left-center field wall. He finished the contest with 10 RBI.
May 25: Meteors 17, Swingers 12 (9)
A "new" team made its first appearance on Sunday, May 25. With the Quad-Cities single-A farm club changing its name back to the River Bandits, former VLB River Bandits coach Scott Ellefritz decided to give up the moniker for a more suiting team name -- the Swingers.
They were trumped by the Meteors in their opening contest, 17-12, thanks to a steady effort up and down the Meteors order. All nine Meteor batters recorded at least two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Doug Scott and Norm Zier -- the fit father of Tony Zier -- each tallied four hits for the visiting Meteors.
The contest went to extra innings after the Swingers tied it with a six-run seventh. The Meteors mustered five crucial runs in the top half of the ninth for the extra-inning win.
May 25: Vandals 37, Swingers 22 (5)
The plug was pulled two innings early in a five-inning concession by the Swingers to the Vandals. The Vandals were awarded a 14-10 win.
The shortened contest came on the heels of an extra-inning game moments earlier. Fatigue, and a disbanding team forced the issue.
New VLB member Tim Wages had the big day for the Vandals, smacking five hits in five at bats, setting the table for the middle of the order. Wages was batting lead off and scored five runs. Josh Paul (five RBI) plated a good portion of those for the Vandals in the win.
