As Veto League Baseball's 2020 season winds down toward its record-setting conclusion, some big games loom on the horizon.
The annual All-Star Classic and River Bend Foodbank food drive will take place on Saturday, September 12th, at Douglas Park in Rock Island. For the first time in years, the league will make a return to their old "home field" - a completely remodeled Douglas Park. Festivities kick off at 6:30 and game time 7:05. The event showcases the league's most dedicated players and is also a benefit for the River Bend Foodbank, which distributes over 17 million meals annually. In their 11-year partnership, Veto League Baseball has amassed over 8,000 pounds of food donated to the River Bend Foodbank.
For the event, friends and family are invited to take in an evening of mediocre baseball. Admission is free, but fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items. Status of an emcee and PA equipment is currently unknown, however, players will ensure that fans enjoy themselves taking in some adult Quad City baseball. The contest is expected to conclude by 9:30 pm. Veteran Amber Kilgard has offered to host an after party for players at Club Kilgard.
Leading up to the night game, divisional playoffs recently concluded. Mason Overmire's Heavy Hitters swept Johnny Readus' Racketeers 4-0, outscoring their opponent 45-23. The Racketeers, however, did have a solid season after their 2019 debut when they went 4-10.
The Saukie Division featured a better duel between Alex Miller's Cannons and Josh Paul's Goonies. The Cannons took the first two in the best-of-seven, dishing the Goonies their first back-to-back losses of the season. However, the Goonies roared back with four straight victories, including an August 22nd double header sweep to clinch a world series berth, taking the series 4-2.
This is the Goonies' first World Series appearance since 2017. Overmire is looking to become the first manager to win back-to-back World Series titles since Matt Veto's Meteors in 2008. Last year, Overmire swept the Spartans 5-0. Overmire also has the best post season record in Veto League history, going a dominating 13-1.
The best-of-seven World Series is set to begin on Tuesday, 5:00 pm, at Dickson Park in Milan. The league is also scheduled to play their 68th and 69th games, which would surpass last year's total of 67. The Veto League record of games in one season is 75 (2012), which is a long-standing record which could be broken in 2020.
