This year, the league will have it's first ever Saturday evening baseball game, to be held on September 15th at the newly remodeled Douglas Park (18th Ave & 10th St, Rock Island). Twenty-two players will be offered a chance to play in the memorable contest. Festivities will begin at 6:30 with first pitch at 7:00. The game should conclude by 9:30.
There is no gate fee for attendance, but the league does ask spectators to bring non-perishable goods which will be donated to the River Bend Foodbank, based out of Davenport. The RBFB is the largest hunger relief organization in eastern Iowa and western Illinois, having distributed over 13.4 million meals in 2017 to hungry people. Their mission is to lead the community-wide effort to end hunger in Iowa and Illinois.
In the league's nine year partnership with the River Bend Foodbank, they have amassed 6,328 pounds of food distributed to local families.
The captains will be veterans Mitch Dietrich and Steve Gerard. Gerard is 11th in career Veto League games played and started in the league in 2011. Dietrich is 27th all-time in games played (110) and debuted in 2015. This will be the first year either of these captains will have coached a night game team. Dietrich will captain the Gems while Gerard's team has yet to be named.
Concessions will be available for sale. Each attendee will be entered into a raffle for a number of gift cards given out throughout the contest.
