On July 8, Veto League announced that their annual night game at Modern Woodmen Park will be on September 22 at 6:30pm. This is later in the season than normal but the River Bandits have cracked down on the amount of people who can use their field during the season.
Veto League Baseball has been granted permission to utilize the field after the season ends. Last year's game was played on August 27. In Davenport for the month of September, the average high temperature is 77 while the average low is 58. There will be about a one month gap between the final game of The VLB Playoffs and the Night Game.
Since 2004, Veto League Baseball has rewarded its most consistent regular-season players with a pick-up game, under the lights, in front of family and friends. In 2008, the VLB played under the lights of Davenport, Iowa’s Modern Woodmen Park for the first time, and continues to play its night game in that Minor League Baseball stadium, home to Midwest League Baseball’s Quad Cities River Bandits.
The Night Game Showcase teams are assembled by an invitation-only basis in accordance with the number of games a player attends during the regular season. The more consistent your attendance during the season, the better chance you have of playing in this game. Since 2007, this game has been played for charity. Since 2008, The VLB has played for the River Bend Foodbank, requesting players and fans to donate non-perishable food items at the entry gate. In 2007, monetary donations were collected for donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Entry to the game is free for fans and they will have the chance to win several raffle prizes that are donated from various businesses around the Quad Cities. The cost of a raffle ticket is a non-perishable food item.
Food and drinks are sold at the night game as well. All money from food sales go to Veto League for the purchase of new equipment and other miscellaneous costs to help keep Veto League free for anyone who wants to participate in the league.
Anyone who is interested in playing baseball in Modern Woodmen Park still can. Because Veto League is designed in a manner that does not require consistent attendance, there is not consistent attendance. Therefore anyone who plays can begin to accumulate games now and be in the top half of the league in terms of games played. Typically the top 24 members of The VLB in terms of games played are invited to the game. Even if you have played zero games this year, with consistent attendance beginning this weekend, it is very possible you can be a top player in terms of games played. Last year, the number 24 player participated in 16 games. Veto League plays 4 games per weekend. That means last year, someone had to participate in every game for just 4 weekends in order to qualify.
