Veto League opened its 18th season on April 18 & 19 at Ridgewood Field in Rock Island. Nine-on-nine double headers were played each day. Saturday had players dusting off cleats and throwing baseball for the first time since September -- and for a select few, the first time in years.
Opening weekend featured VLB debuts for nine players, coming from as far as Charlotte, Iowa, which is nearly an hour drive to Ridgewood. Craig Thomas and Donny Reul made that trek while participating in all four weekend games.
On Sunday, a shorthanded 11 players found themselves in an all-to-familiar situation at Ridgewood. Contemplating calling the game and not playing due to too few players, Omar Ortega rolled in with two new players - Joseph F. Padilla and Joseph R. Padilla. The father-son duo combined for eight runs and nine RBI in two contests. The Charlotte crew would also show along with Casey Buckner to put together a 9-on-9 game.
Jason Huling powered his teams, driving in 14 RBI and scoring nine runs. He also added six doubles and hammered a homerun over the right field fence. Huling only failed to record a hit in just two plate appearances, good for a .905 batting average.
Veto League will convene on Saturdays for the next few weeks, all games 11:30 at Ridgewood Field.
