Year in, year out, "Saukie Days" are one of Veto League's most attended games.
Last Tuesday, 22 players arrived for an evening double header, followed up by another 16 on Thursday. Saturday marked the last games of the regular season, with playoffs looming ahead.
It was 1998 when Veto League got its start. And it was Saukie Field where it all began, when Commissioner Matt Veto gathered up a couple friends to play what was coined "Veto Ball". Twenty-two years later, VLB is back on the friendly confines of Saukie Field, well known for its short fence in left field.
After six games last week, the league saw a dozen homeruns (two inside-the-park). The league had seen that exact same number through the first twelve weeks of the 2019 season. The league is planning to once again take Saukie Field this Wednesday, with Saturday being a possibility if the outfield fence is still erected (it's taken down in the beginning of August for football season).
Also this week starts the VLB Playoffs. The Blackhawk Division will feature Mason Overmire's Heavy Hitters (9-5) facing Jimi Havemann's Zephyrs (6-8). In the Saukie Division, Josh Paul's Goonies (9-5) will take on the Spartans (8-7) who will be sub-captained by co-managers Edwin Moore and Brandon Bollman. The divisional series will be best-of-five with a best-of-seven world series to follow.
