The second weekend of Veto League baseball continued to see high number of players as the league managed another five games over the Saturday/Sunday/Tuesday schedule.
Despite forecasts of thunderstorms, troves of players came out to Northwest Park on Saturday. Twenty-eight players in all, Mason Overmire’s Hitters and Edwin Moore’s Admirals mustered up all of two innings of play before the ultimate umpire, Mother Nature, made her call. The game was abruptly put on pause and, after an unsuccessful attempt to change fields, called altogether and was later changed to an exhibition match, not counting for or against the captain’s records.
Sunday was a different story. 28 players, once again, made the trek to Northwest Park for the first of three games. Game one pitted Branden Bollman’s Bears and Alex Miller’s Cannons. Although the Bears scored one in the top of the first, the Cannons scored four in the bottom of the frame, and never looked back, winning 11 to 8, behind two home runs from Matt Holem, giving him a league-leading four on the young season.
Game two featured president Josh Paul’s Goonies versus Vice President Miller’s Cannons. There’s a reason Miller is merely the vice president because for the first time since Game 3 of the 2019 World Series, there was a shutout. The Cannons found their way to just seven hits, which was three less than the total runs the Goonies scored, thanks to 20 hits, and perfect 3-3 days for Andrew Collins and Jim Goff. Interestingly, the 10-0 shutout was also the score of that World Series Game 3
The finale for Sunday saw Paul’s Goonies play host to Bollman’s Bears. The Goonies continued their hot streak behind a 2-2 day from Dave Helvey and a 2-RBI performance from Anthony Reese. The Bears had a final inning push, scoring 2 runs, but it wasn’t enough, as the Goonies staved them off 6-4.
On Tuesday, May 26, Overmire’s Hitters met up to face off against Johnny Readus’s Racketeers. Behind a number of multi-hit performances from LaVanti Wright, Alex Miller, Dillon Holum, and Readus himself, the Racketeers pulled off the win 9-8. Amber Kilgard tied the game in the top of the sixth thanks to a line drive to left field, but it was Anthony Reese’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the final frame that sealed the victory. In game two, it was the Hitters again, this time as the home team, taking on Moore’s Admirals. In another 1-run game, it was the Hitters that got the win 8-7, behind a 3-3 game from Travis Roux and a double each from Kevin Powell and Ryan Barton.
Another five games in the book and we’d be remiss if we didn’t give a special blurb about Jim Goff. Goff has played in all eleven games thus far this season and is a remarkable 11-0. Those 11 wins would rank in the top 10 for all of the 2019 regular season, and we’re just two weeks into the 2020 season.
After all the contests in week 2, the early leaders in the standings are Josh Paul’s Goonies (4-1) in the Saukie Divsion and Johnny Readus’s Racketeers (3-1) in the Blackhawk Division. Readus, a second year captain, has nearly matched his win total (4) from all of last year.
