If the player turnout has anything to say about 2023 - it's that this season will be another strong output by Veto League Baseball.
As the league just surpassed the one month mark, 18 total games have been played, to include most on Saturdays, new games scheduled Thursdays and a couple on Sunday of opening weekend. The league has been able to utilize Ridgewood Field in southwest Rock Island as the primary "Home" of Veto League Baseball, while Dickson Park - an oversized softball field in Milan - has worked well as a second option "in case of emergency".
Already through the first four weeks, the league has welcomed 18 new players for a total of 909 in the league's 26-year history. Three of those players have participated in at least half of the league's games, with Bailey Rericha leading the charge with 14 games played. Fellow rookie Noah Harrison leads all players in doubles (12) while near the leaders in batting average at nearly .700.
After a year hiatus, Zach Graham has returned to VLB, leading the league in homeruns (5) and second in RBI despite playing only half the league's games. After stuffing the stat sheets with 10 RBIs this past Thursday evening, Alex Miller sits atop the RBI lead with 31. Early season MVP favorite Kyle Kent has a large lead in the runs category, touching home plate 36 times in 16 games, while also batting a shoked-emoji-face .775. Kent is also captain of the 1st place Katanas (6-1).
On May 20th, the league was surprised with a professional photographer dropping in to take some action shots of the contests. David McDanel with Nat20 Photography discovered the league by seeing a flyer Mason Overmire had posted in 2022 at Clint's Pizza. McDanel would post roughly 100 awesome photos from the May 20th double-header. These pictures can be seen and downloaded here.
Games will continue Saturday at 11:00 and Thursday evenings at 5:00, with all games scheduled at Ridgewood Field. Any players are welcome to join Veto League Baseball. The league is free to play and welcome to all players (males and females) of all skill levels who are high school age and older.
