Players in attendance included veterans Jeff Kilgard, Scott Ellefritz and Josh Paul. Two rookies also made an appearance: Edwin Moore & Randy Roos. Both new players vowed to make games regularly and are anticipating a spot in the Modern Woodmen Park annual All-Star Showcase.
Mark your calendars for the weekend of April 18-19 for Opening Weekend. A large crowd is always present for the kickoff of a new season. Game time will remain at 11:30. Location has yet to be determined. Douglas Park is still the "home" of/news.html Veto League, however, last season was unavailable for many weeks due to other baseball and softball tournaments and leagues. Ridgewood Field was used as the primary backup.
The biggest change made at the Winter Meetings was to cut VLB to one day per week -- Saturdays. For the last dozen years, VLB has been played on Saturday and Sunday. However, due to lack of player turnout last season, the few players who showed on a given Saturday and/or Sunday were often played 6-on-6 (at best). It was decided that the highest likelihood to ensure a game was played was to cut games to one day/week, however, Opening Weekend will still be Saturday/Sunday. If a large number of players convene this season, there is potential for the league to expand back to it's regular Sunday games.
Another alteration this year is to cut captains from six to four and divisions back to one. This is how Veto League was about ten years ago. In this format, all captains will make playoffs with the #1 seed facing #4 and #2 versus #3 in the first round of the playoffs.
Finally, the only change is that if players show and no game is played, those players in essence get credit for two games played toward the night game. In previous years someone would get one game played for showing when there weren't enough players to field a game.
Discussion was had about what to do with current league funds. VLB raised approximately $600 at the night game, with a good portion of that going back to Modern Wooden Park for field rental. New bases will be purchased along with baseballs, which retail for $40+/dozen.

See you April 18 & 19!
