On Sunday, March 21st, the annual Winter Meetings were held at Josh Paul's residence. Twelve active Veto League Baseball players were in attendance: Ryan Barton, Brandon Bollman, Mitch Dietrich, Jimi Havemann, Brent Lafrenz, Alex Miller, Edwin Moore, Remington Nimrick, Mason Overmire, Josh Paul, Johnny Readus and Jon Weber.
The traditional meeting always discusses the beginning of the season, "home field", captains, potential rule changes and equipment needs.
Players agreed that Opening Weekend for the league's 22nd season would be the weekend after Easter (April 27-28). The league will schedule double headers on Saturdays and Tuesdays, with Tuesday games aiming for two five-inning contests. An occasional Sunday could be played depending on attendance. The league will attempt to keep Ridgewood Field as their home park.
There is a major shake-up in captains, with half of 2018's owners being transitioned out. Captains are selected based on games played from the previous season. New captains include Havemann, Readus and the 2018 games played leader, Overmire. Divisions were randomly selected, and as luck would have it, the three new captains will all be in the Blackhawk Division while 2018 rivals Goonies, Spartans and Cannons will battle in the Saukie Division. Dietrich will serve as the primary sub-captain.
The league will look into purchasing limited liability insurance in hopes of guaranteeing a field at the Milan Little League complex.
Of note were several potential rule changes, each of which was voted on:
- Line up change (Havemann) - The top player on each All-Star Classic (night game) team who play the most games during the season get to select their lineup position in the night game (passed unanimously)
- Late arrival (Barton) - Player(s) arriving after the draft starts must sit their first inning fielding if teams are greater than 9-on-9 (voted unanimously)
- Late arrival (Miller) - If a player arrives after a game has started and there are even teams, the losing team decides if they want that player (voted against 7-5)
Josh Paul will look into creating Veto League hoodie and official player jersey orders.
