A seasonal record was guaranteed to fall on Saturday no matter what. Heckenkamp had been cruising through the VLB with a 3-0 record entering the match-up and found his team up 6-2 after three innings. Engstrom, playing for Heckenkamp, was looking for his first individual win. With Engstrom homering his first three times to the plate, it looked as if Heckenkamp would walk away with his fourth consecutive victory.
In the eighth inning, however, Colby Moore belted a pitch to the wall in left center, legging out an uncharacteristic triple that sparked a 12-run Veto rally, the first time double digits have been scored in a single inning this season.
Bobby Carter would make his presence felt as well with 10 RBI while hitting for the cycle.
“I’m not sure what happened today,” Heckenkamp said. “But I’m pretty sure it had something to do with Carlson.”
Jacob VandeMoortel arrived late for Heckenkamp’s team, but not late enough. His five errors also assisted in the 12 run onslaught in the eighth.
“It’s nice to finally get a big win against a tough competitor like Heckenkamp,” Veto said. “I got heckled by Carlson after I helped Engstrom’s ball over the fence. It’s never a good time when Carlson can get licks in on you.”
Sunday’s match-up dubbed ‘Rivalry Revisited’ by the media feature a 23-12 victory over McCafferty that allowed Veto a weekend sweep.
Zach Schoop, making his Veto League debut, made his presence felt early scorching line drives to right while plating 4 runs.
Josh Bender, in a Lawhorn-esque performance managed to take home the ‘Silver Challis’ striking out 5 times in one game.
“Oh my God!” Bender said.
Bender made up for his performance at the plate by making solid plays in the field, committing no errors and throwing out several runners.
Ashley Engstrom provided the bulk of McCafferty’s offense knocking in 5 runs while recording a home-run.
Kiel Engstrom is playing catch-up in the home-run column trailing his brother after once leading the home-run race. Kiel Engstrom had one home-run called back after ruled foul, and immediately crushed the next pitch well fair over the left field wall.
“My brother is a beast,” Engstrom said. “I’m not sure I’ll catch him, but you never know with his arm after his surgery.”
McCafferty was disappointed with his crew, especially after seeing Brett Carlson stand in the outfield while leaning up against the fence, sleeves pulled up, hoping to even out his farmer’s tan.
“I really just wanted to go home,” McCafferty said.
Another double digit rally in the eighth inning plated 11 runs for Veto, and with the two-game weekend sweep, Veto moves to within a half game of first place.
