"I don't know Veto, I think you're in trouble," Ellefritz as teams were being picked.
It turned out that Veto's thirst for defense paid dividends in the lowest scoring game of the season.
"I'm not sure there were more than three errors total in this game," Veto said. "Besides, I had Ryan Williams on my team. That's a guaranteed win."
When Veto is opposite Ryan Williams, history oddly has dictated a loss. Williams was 1-for-4 on the day and made several important plays at short.
he VLB welcomed newcomer Kevin Grady and Jeff Kilgard welcomed him with a fastball over the head--a nontraditional greeting that might become the norm. Grady responded with a single to center. He had two hits in his debut.
Jimmy Quick opposed the Meteors and was heckled for two drops at catcher. Quick scored one of the three River Bandit runs hitting safely twice.
As softball players practiced on the all-grass, crappy field, Veto as Quick if he'd rather be over there.
"Yes. Softball has ruined my baseball swing," Quick said of his dramatic, uppercut hack.
"But you are in the VLB history books (for hitting the first home-run at Veterans Park) and nobody can take that away from you," Veto said.
The Meteors scored three times in the top of the first inning. Brad Ryan led off with a single and moved to second on a Veto fielder's choice. Josh Smith followed with a single and Ryan scored on a Jon Escajeda RBI double. Chris Polton drove in Escajeda and Kilgard followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0 early.
The Bandits followed with a run in the first and third, but the Meteors took a 5-1 lead with a run in the second and fifth innings. The Bandits added a run in the six to make it 5-3.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Bandits' Grady and Jeff Shadden each singled to threaten the Meteor lead. Smith closed the door on the mound to secure the elusive road victory.
"It's always hard to win on the road, so this one was huge," Veto said. The win keeps the Meteors atop the Saukie Division.
The Bandits and Meteors will meet again in game two of Sunday's doubleheader. The Vandals and SNK Crushers rematch on Saturday. The Crushers and Jeff Kilgard are looking for their first win.
