First 15-Run Rule Implementation
After getting chased off the Black Hawk Diamond and displaced again around the Quad Cities, the VLB was further frustrated in its search for a field.
So frustrated that it actually wound up playing on a vegetated Veterans Park.
The Vandals (0-2), captained by Josh Paul, and the Baseball Furies (2-0) met at Saukie only to have it taken. The Moline Sophomore diamond was also under wraps. After one warning already, the VLB decided it would try to play at the Moline Black Hawks field.
"You guys need permission to play here," a surly man stated. Josh Paul sincerely apologized only for the surly gentleman to say, "You need to learn how to read, too," in reference to a piece of tattered computer paper stapled to the dugout walls reading "We have a game today."
So much for playing baseball on a baseball field.
With that, the Black Hawks diamond is officially off the list of fields for the VLB.
The Furies and Vandals instead broke in Veterans Park a week ahead of schedule.
Poor field conditions didn't stop the Vandals from showing off their leather turning three double plays on the evening, certainly tying a VLB record.
However, it was offense they lacked.
Jesus Apodaca, in his first game of 2006, playing for his favorite Baseball Furies, rattled off five hits in the lead off role. Ryan Williams, Josh Smith and Bob Zerull each smacked a six-pack of hits en route to a convincing 23-8 victory in seven innings. It was the first game to be ended by the 15-run in seven rule.
Offensively for the Vandals, Josh Kallman was 3-for-5 with two driven in. Alex Tschopp was hit-less, but still managed to score three times.
