Veto Leaguers Called to Help
Veterans Park will be receiving a much-needed face lift, and it’s up to the VLB to help out.
A huge opportunity was placed in front of the VLB on Sunday as Moline Park Board President Roger Clawson stopped by. Clawson said he was pleased to see someone was using the dilapidated field and said help is on the way.
Clawson is being gracious enough to allow us to use the field and has even been generous enough to secure us three bases for our play. Possibilities of placing a lock box behind the backstop have been discussed, but for now, the bases will be carried with the league.
The great news is that on Monday (June 26) or some time this week, members of the parks department will be tilling the Veterans Park infield to remove the weeds and unwanted grass. This is a superb opportunity to beautify the field and give back to those who have allowed us to use it.
Please call Matt Veto at the number emailed to you when you get off work or when you have a few hours of free time. Veto is asking that members of the VLB take time to help rake these weeds off the field when the dirt is tilled. Veto, Jeff Kilgard, and possibly Josh Paul have committed to helping out. Bring grass rakes, garden rakes and steel tinned rakes again. This time the job will be done right and whole-heartedly. The park department very much appreciates our efforts and this is a great opportunity to build working relationships and help the VLB. Thanks for you support.
Meteors 24, Vandals 14
In the first meeting between the new oldest rivals (now that Lance McCafferty's King Cobras are defunct) Matt Veto's Meteors (5-2) improve on their league-best record with a 24-14 trouncing of Kiel Engstrom's Vandals (4-4) in the highest scoring game of the year on Sunday.
Aside from the late arriving David Luker, every Meteor drove in a run. Scott Ellefritz led the way with four RBI's capping a 4-for-8 day.
Ellefritz was also on the front end of a surprising highlight. With runners on second and third, Ellefritz was intentionally walked, bringing up Jeff Kilgard with the bases loaded. Kilgard swung with all of his might and cleared the bases with his second (yes... I said second) triple of the year. That happened with two of the slowest VLBers to grace the field. (Cast your vote for the slowest VLBer on the VLB Message Board).
Fresh off his trip to California, Alex Tschopp relived his beach bum days played shirtless, shoe-less, and without socks, while listening to his CD Walkman. It was certainly one for the record books.
Offensively, the Vandals were led by Bob Zerull (4-for-6) who had four RBI. Six of the starting nine had three or more hits for the Vandals. Craig Fyfe stays hot at the plate going 6-for-6 with three runs score.
Josh Francque was hit in the butt with a throw from the shortstop to cap the hilarity. He sat out an inning, but rubbed it off.
It was later reported, as Veto went to cover the Short Hills Amateur Tournament, that Brett Carlson finished second-to-last shooting a 50-55 on the day for a two-day total of 201. Carlson promised to walk off the course if he shot a 50 or more. When asked by Mitch Heckenkamp why he kept playing, Carlson responded simply, "It's too much effort to walk back." Carlson will return to the baseball diamond where he belongs on Wednesday.
River Bandits 25, Eskimos 10
Before Sunday's 38-run adventure, Saturday's 35-run extravaganza enjoyed a short-lived reign as the highest-scoring contest of the year.
Ellefritz's River Bandits (6-3) dominated the down-on-their-luck (or returned-to-old-form) Eskimos (3-6) with a convincing 25-10 win.
This writer was at a wedding on Saturday, but can almost guarantee that Ellefritz stated before the game "I can't possibly be captain, again." (Someone back me up).
Despite a recent rash of ballgames, the Bandits appeared undaunted by constant game play. They set the record for most hits in a game with the fewest extra-base hits. Knocking out 36 hits in the game, the Bandits had only Zerull's home-run to show for in the extra-base hit column. Four of the six Bandits batters had at least seven hits in the game. Zerull and Amos Whiting combined for 15 hits and 11 RBI.
The Eskimos continue to dwell in the Saukie Division cellar.
"But, hey, that's OK," Eskimo captain Jon Escajeda said. "They've got wine in the cellar."
Two dogs were on hand to watch the contest tying the record for greatest number of animals in attendance of a VLB game. One time there was a skunk and another time, a snake.
