Matt Veto played two innings in work clothes and Craig Fyfe played a half inning in bare feet. Yes, Wednesday's Black Hawk Division clash between the Vandals (4-2) and the Baseball Furies (4-4) was shaping up to be another normal Veto League ballgame.
Offense took center stage as the Vandals scored 11 unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings to ensure a 23-10 victory with help from captain Josh Paul.
Brad Ryan capped a 7-for-8 game with a double and two RBI for the Vandals. Fyfe went 6-for-7 and also drove in two runs.
Jimmy Quick's bat provided the bulk of the offensive blow as he smashed his third home run of the year. Quick plated five runs on the day.
Jon Escajeda also returned to action after a week long rehab stint with VLB-Los Angeles.
"It's funny, out there they don't have weeds on the infield," Escajeda said. "It's like they were a real team."
The infield dirt at Veterans Park is again falling to the invasion of milk weed and dandelions calling for another VLB field day. Since Father's Day is on Sunday, the day of weed-pulling will likely take place on Sunday, June 23. (Please be willing to help).
For the Baseball Furies, Scott Ellefritz managed to leg out a pair of doubles en route to a five-hit day. Joe Escajeda also had a solid day hitting safely in four of hit six plate appearances. Joe was one of six players with four-hit days.
