For six hours on Friday, a few Veto Leaguers worked tirelessly on improving the weed-covered Veterans Park. After Roger Clawson had the field tilled, work still needed to be done.
The bases were replanted, the entire infield was raked by hand, and weeds were removed. The dirt was left very loose, almost sand-like, and needs rain to harden. Thanks to Kiel Engstrom, Jeff Kilgard, Jon Escajeda, Bob Zerull, and Matt Veto for helping.
For the first time this season, Veto Leaguers had to suffer through the disappointment of going home early after too few people showed up to the ballpark.
On a hot and steamy July 1, nine players arrived at Veterans Park, but that was all they would get. Scott Ellefritz reports that many members are on vacation.
"We didn't have enough to play, so we just went to Old Country Buffet," Ellefritz said.
Jeff Kilgard started with a scoop of mashed potatoes and turkey. He later hit a home-run with a side of coleslaw.
Baseball Furies 6, Meteors 5 (7)
Veto League scraped up just enough talent for a Sunday 12-man tango at Veterans Park. Josh Smith coached the Meteors in absence of Coach Matt Veto who was busy sitting in the sun for eight hours covering Legion baseball. Veto grew disgusted in one particular outing.
"This moron coach threw the same pitcher for 14-innings," Veto said. "I mean, who lets a kid throw that long? It was like Dave Anderson was out there."
Veto would have been likely disgusted with the play of his first place Meteors (6-3) now in a tie atop the Saukie with the River Bandits.
Everyone in the Meteor lineup hit safely in the top of the first inning and plated four runs. However, the Baseball Furies (5-4) came back with two in the first and one in the second.
The Meteors made it 5-3 after the third inning. Kiel Engstrom led off and drove in two runs. That was as far as the Meteors would go.
The Furies cut it a run closer when Andy Moeller doubled, injuring himself on an awkward pull-up to the bag.
"My foot slipped on the loose dirt and my leg locked up and was like a pole vault," Moeller said.
He was replaced with a ghost man, now known to be Jimmy Hoffa. Ellefritz doubled in the next at bat to drive in the former Teamster president.
The Furies tied the game in the seventh thanks to crucial errors keeping the inning alive. Young Joe Escajeda won the game with a sacrifice fly.
The VLB will continue on Wednesday with an SNK Crushers vs. Baseball Furies match-up, first vs. last in the Black Hawk. The Crushers are last, by the way.
